The Richmond Fellowship Society (India), Bangalore Branch – World Mental Health Day Celebrations

October 16, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Inter NGO Mental Health Fest held on 16th October 2019 at ‘Chetana’ Auditorium

“Be kind for everyone as everyone you meet is fighting a battle, you know nothing about. “

Richmond Fellowship Society, Bangalore Branch celebrated World Mental Health Day-2019-second year in a row, by organizing another Inter NGO fest. In addition to this, an Inter Collegiate Short Film Competition was also held this year. Seven NGO’s/Organizations namely Athma Shakti Vidyalaya, Spandana Health Care, Cadabam’s Psycho-social Rehabilitation Centre, Medico Pastoral Association, NIMHANS, MIND and The Richmond Fellowship Society (I), Bangalore Branch took part in this exhilarating NGO Fest.  PSG College of Arts & Science, Coimbatore and St. Philomena College, Puttur were the two colleges who participated in the Inter Collegiate short Film Festival. The entire event was based on this year’s WHO (World Health Organization) World Mental Health Day, theme – ‘Suicide Prevention’.

The Chief Guest for the event was Dr. Poornima Bhola (Additional Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology, NIMHANS). The judges for the dance competition were Ms.Sudha Rao, Ms.Sandhya Udupa and Ms. Aishwarya Nityananda. All 3 judges are performing artists and run dance schools. The Inter NGO Fest started with the chief guest’s address, followed by the two exhilarating competitions – dance and quiz competition.

Dr. Poornima started her speech stating that she read a quote on the back of a van which said, ‘What you do for others matter than what you do for yourself.’ She emphasized on the theme and the 4 key intervention given by WHO which have proven to be effective.  Importance and sensitivity should be given to how media covers the issues of suicide.

Followed by this we had the two competitions. We started with the dance competition, where the theme was ‘Fusion Dance’.  A maximum of 6 clients/residents were allowed to participate and a time limit of 6 minutes was given for each team. All participating NGOs took part with great enthusiasm and showed their skills admirably. The criteria for the assessment of the dance were connection to theme, direction and technical work.  NIMHANS won 1st prize, Athma Shakthi Vidyalaya won 2nd prize and 3rd prize was won by Richmond Fellowship Society.

All 7 NGO’s took part in the quiz competition which had three categories namely, general knowledge/sports, suicide prevention and the audio-visual round.  The amount of information these clients possessed was mind boggling and many questions could not be answered by the staff too! Athma Shakthi Vidyalaya won 1st prize, Cadabams won 2nd prize and the 3rd prize went to NIMHANS.

Two colleges took part in the Inter Collegiate Film Festival- PSG College of Arts & Science, Coimbatore and St. Philomena College, Puttur who won the prize.  The criteria for judging were – theme (positive message), direction & acting and technical details (lighting, music background). St. Philomena College won the prize or the best film.

This was a proud moment for RFS as for the second year in a row the Inter NGO fest was a huge success! A special mention and thanks to Olympic Sports for sponsoring the trophies for the dance competition. We wish to continue this fest in the future too.

Virat Kohli once said. “Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success.” These are the qualities we see in our residents/clients and they are, our inspiration to continue celebrating the Inter NGO fest every year with great gusto!’
